I was reading through Hosea this morning and one particular section really hit me (Hosea 5:14-15). I thought it was worth sharing with you. Up to this point in the book, the prophet denounced the idolatry of the nation. The are consistently choosing their idols rather than the LORD. The people of the land are like unfaithful spouses, who choose prostitutes as their lovers rather than their wives. And as a result they are “giving birth” to the ramifications of their idolatry, and it is devastating. Concerning the faithfulness level of the people of God, he says:
Hosea 6:4 (NLT) – “O Israel and Judah, what should I do with you?” asks the LORD. “For your love vanishes like the morning mist and disappears like dew in the sunlight.
And then we come to the shocking statement from chapter 5. It’s a terrifying thought and picture…
14 For I will be like a lion to Ephraim And like a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will tear to pieces and go away, I will carry away, and there will be none to deliver.
15 I will go away and return to My place Until they acknowledge their guilt and seek My face; In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.
Wow. What a mind picture. God leaving them and waiting for them to return to him. Leaving them to the deliverance of the gods they have chosen over Him instead. Through Hosea, the people recognize what they must do:
1 “Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bandage us.
2 “He will revive us after two days; He will raise us up on the third day, That we may live before Him.
3 “So let us know, let us press on to know the LORD. His going forth is as certain as the dawn; And He will come to us like the rain, Like the spring rain watering the earth.”
The LORD is so merciful – offering healing to the wounds caused by our unfaithfulness to Him.
May we never leave Him. May we press on to know Him more.
Hosea 6:6 (ESV) – For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
Rejoice in His mercy! Praise Him for His love! Thank Him for His faithfulness!
I’ll leave you with this powerful song from Shane & Shane about this section of Scripture
